Interview Tips and Advice


  • Be calm, philosophical, professional and determined
  • Consider the location of interview and plan how to get there in time
  • Take spare copies of your CV to the interview
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes in advance. Not more or less
  • Be polite to the receptionist. She/he may be asked about you
  • Check the names of the panel and prepare to use them on introduction
  • Review your notes while waiting. Breathe deeply and relax
  • Remember to slow down your speech and lower your voice tone
  • If the interviewer approaches you, stand, use their name, make eye contact and give a firm handshake
  • Prepare to enter the room smiling and courteous but not obsequious
  • Accept that you will be nervous. It will enhance your performance
  • Keep eye contact with the questioner/address answers to whole panel
  • Avoid lecturing the panel on your own personal views/philosophy
  • Pitch answers at a level of technicality appropriate to your interviewing panel
  • Demonstrate integrity by not giving away confidential info re. your previous job/colleagues
  • Take time to think by asking for a question to be clarified
  • Stay calm at all times even if provoked
  • Be a listener and show patience if gaps in questioning occur
